(February 17, 2013)--There's about a 15 percent increase in people taking anger management courses at various AWARE Central Texas locations compared to this time last year.
Much of the increase includes both adults and juvenile cases and required by court orders.
Julie Castaneda is one of those participants.
She said her anger issues have gotten her into arguments with her family and even a fist fight with a police officer.
After four years in prison, the courts ordered Castaneda to take anger management classes.
AWARE Central Texas said the rising numbers could be due to residents' money problems and the area's growing population, adding traffic congestion and tension.
Its staff also said working on correctly dealing with the anger could prevent violence and other issues for the community.
"If you take a family who has trauma going on in their life and affect some kind of prevention measure, that will reflect in the community," said Joey Ellis of AWARE Central Texas.
The classes, which have about a thousand participants each year, teach them how to express anger through writing, reading, drawing and other methods.
