Select Veterans Don’t Have To Pay To Use Some Road Tolls

By: Brittany Semadeni Email

(August 31, 2012)--The Texas Transportation Commission has waived the fee for disabled vets, Purple Heart & Medal of Honor recipients driving on certain toll roads.

In Central Texas near Austin, these vets will be able to drive free of charge on Loop 1, SH 45 North, SH 45 southeast, and SH 130 (segments 1-4).

Additionally, qualified veterans will be able to travel free of charge on the Camino Colombia, also SH 255, near Laredo and Loop 49 in Tyler.

House Bill 3139, legislation passed in 2009, allows for the free service.

The plan was recently called on by Governor Rick Perry, the Texas Transportation Commission said.

“Our veterans are called by a higher calling that is rooted in the fundamental values of our nation,” Governor Perry said.

The program will be implemented on January 1.
