TEMPLE (September 11, 2013) --- On Wednesday Temple firefighters honored the first responders lost their lives during the 9/11 terrorist attacks 12 years ago by climbing a total of 343 flights of stairs, one for each New York City firefighter who died.

As they repeatedly climbed the 13 flights of stairs in Temple’s Kyle Building the names of the fallen firefighters were read.

"One of the first things we did when we heard about this is our entire engine company went to our pastor and he prayed for us that day it was very difficult," Captain Leroy Vargas of Temple Fire & Rescue said.

A bell was tolled in four series of five rings each in a traditional firehouse signal marking the death of a firefighter.
