TEMPLE (October 10, 2012)-Temple homeowners can apply to receive a free tree from the Temple Parks and Leisure Services Department through the A Tree for Me program.

A Tree for Me aims to help place trees across the city.

More than 100 trees will be given away on October 20.

"Trees can provide shade, reduce overall air conditioning costs for your home, and benefit the environment. Our goal is to build more of a tree canopy in Temple," Temple Arborist Val Roming said .

Trees offered this year include: Crepemyrtle, Bald Cypress, Chinquapin Oak, Texas Mountain Laurel, Live Oak, Possumhaw Holly, Red Bud, Red Oak, and Vitex trees.

All of the trees are grown at the City Tree Farm and are drought tolerant and native Texas trees.

The Tree Farm was established as part of a 2005 Texas Forestry Services grant.

The trees given away for A Tree for Me are about four years old.

Officials say it is best if participants can bring a pick-up truck or trailer to take the tree home.

Applications are available at the Parks and Leisure Services facilities and can be downloaded online.

For more information, visit the Temple Trees website, or call Val Roming at (254) 298-5401.
