TEMPLE (October 31, 2012)--The Central Texas Veterans Health Care System will begin using UV disinfection in hopes of reducing hospital infections.
According to a VA spokesperson, healthcare associated infections are one of the top ten leading causes of death in the United States and are a threat to patient safety.
The cost to treat the infections in the U.S. healthcare system is about $9 billion per year, a spokesperson said.
The VA hospital hopes that introducing the technology in Central Texas will cut back on the cost of certain healthcare treatment and eliminate infections received by patients while in the hospital.
