(November 7, 2012)—The last day Texas could claim a day without a fatality on Texas roads was 12 years ago.

The alarming statistic was put out by TxDOT Wednesday.

According to TxDOT, 41,252 fatalities have been reported since November 7, 2000.

“One fatality on a Texas Road is one too many and to see as many as 8 or 10 in a single day is unacceptable,” TxDOT Executive Director Phil Wilson said.

The majority of traffic fatalities are caused by people not wearing seat belts, drinking and driving and distractions.

TxDOT has begun displaying the number of fatalities to date on message signs along highways in hopes of cutting down on the number of reported deaths.

Some simple ways drivers can reduce the chance of a fatality are to put their phone away, buckle seat belts, use the left lane for passing only and obey all traffic laws.
