TROY (March 19, 2013)—The remains of three men and an infant found in unmarked graves unearthed by a Texas Department of Transportation contractor in the area of the old Elm Creek Bridge along the southbound Interstate 35 frontage road in Troy will be reburied next week.
The contractor uncovered bone fragments and coffin hardware from two unmarked graves in August 2012.
Work was halted for 30 days while a TxDOT archaeologist excavated the site, ultimately removing four sets of remains from the site.
Nine people responded to a request for DNA in an effort to identify the remains, but none tested positive.
The remains will be re interred on Tuesday in the Roberts Cemetery and a headstone will be erected that identifies those buried there as “Unknown--Moved from Highway Right of Way—2012,” TxDOT said.
