WACO (September 13, 2012)--A Waco homeowner was disappointed when a century-old live oak tree in his front yard was struck by lightning and eventually died.
But when a sculptor came along with a vision for the tree trunk, that disappointment turned into hardwood support for a local university.
The old tree stump is soon to be a life-sized statue of a Baylor Bear, with his right paw raised into the recognizable "bear claw" that students in the stands use to drive their teams to victory.
The statue still is a work in progress but when its done, the homeowner, a Baylor supporter, will have a permanent reminder of the mascot that instills pride in "That Good Old Baylor Line."
