WACO (October 2, 2013)--A man who was sleeping on a sidewalk early Wednesday was awakened by a would-be robber and beaten with his own cane.

The 56-year-old victim was taken to a Waco hospital by ambulance with injuries to his head and face, Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said Wednesday.

Swanton said officers were sent at around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday to Club Crush, at 1014 N. 25th Street, after the man reported he was beaten during a robbery attempt.

Officers found the man on the sidewalk in front of Club Crush.

He told them another man confronted him and demanded money.

When the victim told his assailant he had no money, the attacker grabbed the victim's cane and beat him with it.

The victim was taken by ambulance to a Waco hospital where he was treated for his injuries and later released.

His name wasn’t released.
