WACO (May 13, 2013)--Police in Waco were warning residents Monday that some scammers are using Craigslist to buy goods and then paying for them with counterfeit cash.
Waco police St. W. Patrick Swanton said over the past couple of months scammers have been using counterfeit cash to buy high-end goods offered for sale on Craigslist.
The scammers are searching Craigslist for goods that the victims have posted for sale, contacting the sellers and arranging to meet them to pay for the goods in cash.
The problem is, Swanton said, the cash turns out to be counterfeit.
Swanton said cases in the Waco area have involved high-end electronics such as iPads, computers, gaming systems and other expensive products.
Swanton said anyone placing an item for sale on Craiglist should use extreme caution when completing a transaction, especially if cash is involved.
He suggested recording license plate number and any other details that the seller can remember.
