WACO (May 6, 2014) With summer right around the corner, a group of ambitious elementary school kids is working to help residents who ride the bus beat the heat.

Third and fourth graders in the Kindness and Compassion Club at Hewitt Elementary School are raising money to erect a bus stop shelter at the Walmart on Hewitt Drive.

"The students had seen people sitting in the rain and in the heat and they are very excited about making a difference in our community by doing this," Hewitt Elementary counselor Jodi Heston said.

The students have collected about $1,300 through fundraisers at their school.

Heston said the City of Waco and local businesses have helped the students with this project.

Heston said this project has taken about two years so far but they hope to have in bus stop shelter in place by June.
