WACO (August 21, 2013)—Veterans Affairs Undersecretary for Benefits Allison Hickey met behind closed doors Wednesday morning in Waco with more than 600 local VA employees.
The meeting comes at a time when criticism is mounting about the slow pace of processing veterans’ claims in general and about the backlog in the Waco Regional Office in particular.
The local employees are working under mandatory overtime to try to catch up in large part because of new claims from thousands of Vietnam-era veterans.
Hickey said Wednesday the employees are making headway and said she thanked them for their efforts.
"I spent some time today telling them that the hard work they are doing in mandatory overtime has taken the backlog down by more than 130,000 claims in the last four months here in Waco."
