WACO (July 27, 2012)--A woman pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday to using a fraudulent Social Security number to file a claim in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Waco.
U.S. District Judge Walter S. Smith set Maria Delsocorro Torres for sentencing on Sept. 19
A federal grand jury indictment says on Sept. 3, 2010, Torres, who also goes by the names Socorro Gallegos and Maria S. Garcia-Torres, filed for bankruptcy in U.S. Bankruptcy Court, in Waco and as part of that filing used what she knew to be a fraudulent Social Security number in an effort to gain benefit in the bankruptcy.
The indictment also charges Torres fraudulently filed a separate bankruptcy in the same court on an earlier date that constituted an effort by her to conceal some of her assets.
Torres could be sentenced to as much as five years in prison and could be fined as much as $250,000.
