WACO (February 18, 2013)-- University High School will host more than 20 teams from Central Texas for the annual Battle of the Books competition Friday, presented by the Education Service Center Region 12 (ESC).
The teams will be made up of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders from Region 12.
Students will be quizzed over author names, content, and detail to test their knowledge and comprehension of the selected books from the statewide Lone Star Reading List developed by public and school librarians.
The competition is a great outlet for students to be academically competitive while learning about a variety of book genres, ESC Library and Instructional Technology Specialist Sherry McElhannon said.
The winning team will be awarded medals along with a complete set of the 2013 Lone Star books for their school’s library.
Twenty-two school districts and charter schools will participate in the competition including: Copperas Cove ISD, Gatesville ISD, Killeen ISD, Lampasas ISD, Temple ISD, and West ISD.
In honor of the competition, the ESC will host a special author event Thursday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at ESC Region 12 in Waco.
Participants and members of the community will have the opportunity to meet “A Tale Dark and Grimm” Author Adam Gidwitz.
His book was one of this year’s Battle of the Books selection.
The McLennan County Library and ESC will host a cover design competition along with the meet and greet. Attendees will be allowed to design a new book cover for “A Tale Dark and Grimm” in order to compete for a signed copy of “In a Glass Grimly,” Gidwitz’s second book.
Battle of the Books will take place at the University High School Gym beginning at 1 p.m.
“I’m looking forward to this competition because there is absolutely nothing like being in a room full of over 120 middle school kids who are all excited about reading,” McElhannon said.
