WACO (November 5, 2012)--A three-dimensional 400-square-foot temporary home built by Baylor students in the event of natural disasters will be entered into a national video contest.

Interior design students, along with some engineering, film and psychology students, will design a small dwelling that cannot exceed 400 square feet for a family of four.

The unit must contain a sleeping area, food preparation area and bathroom, with a sustainable solution considered. The building must be quick to assemble and disassemble and tents will not be allowed.

On Monday, Texas Baptist Disaster Recovery Specialist Marla Bearden discussed with students the current temporary housing efforts in Japan, Haiti and the Gulf Coast.

To prepare for the contest students have researched the pros and cons of government-provided lodging during past disasters.

The contest is sponsored by the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC) and Florida International University’s Department of Interior Architecture.

The competition begins Friday.
