WACO (September 21, 2012)—The American Red Cross is looking for blood donors Sunday during Sickle Cell Awareness Month.
A blood donation opportunity is Sunday at St. Francis Catholic Church from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Sickle cell disease causes red blood cells to form in an abnormal crescent shape and can be treated with blood transfusions.
According to the American Red Cross, patients with the disease are primarily African-American and are less likely to have complications from blood donated by someone within their racial and ethnic groups.
The Red Cross works to maintain a diverse base of blood donors to help ensure that all blood types are available for patients with serious medical needs.
