WACO (March 4, 2013)--The first day of the 2013 statewide warrant roundup netted 20 arrests and cleared 40 warrants in Waco.
The roundup is going on all month long all across Texas.
Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said the results on the first day were better than expected.
"Anytime you can make 20 arrests and clear twice that many warrants in one day it's a pretty good day," Swanton said.
The warrant roundup focuses on misdemeanor warrants, most of them for traffic violations, but the impact on the city is surprising.
Swanton said he calculated the scope of the effort and discovered there are about 16,000 outstanding warrants in the City of Waco alone, and those warrants add up to almost $11 million in unpaid fines.
