WACO (September 11, 2012)--On Friday, a handful of residents are expected to come out to N. 5th and Webster Avenue to spend the night in a box.
The “Box City” event is an effort to raise money to help the homeless.
The event is from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m. and each participant is expected to raise at least $50.
Last night, at least 643,067 people slept in a box, shelter or on the streets across the nation, a Mission Waco spokesperson said.
Of that number, about 67,000 are veterans, according to Mission Waco.
Other activities to raise awareness of the homeless include spending $35 to help purchase a new pair of shoes for the homeless, participating in the Walk for the Homeless and attending the Church Under the Bridge 20-year anniversary celebration.
The walk will take place the next morning on Sunday from 8 a.m. until 10:20 a.m. beginning at Meyer Ctr.
The celebration will follow at 10:45 a.m. at I-35 and S. 4th Street.
