WACO (September 25, 2012)-Family Abuse Center, a local women's shelter serving Waco and McLennan County and the surrounding counties of Bosque, Hill, falls, Freestone, Limestone, and Navarro, received a $20,000 grant from the Mary Kay Foundation.

In observation of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, The Mary Kay Foundation awards $20,000 to more than 150 domestic violence shelters across the country, totaling more than $3 million in grants.

Family Abuse Center will use the grant to provide critical support for its comprehensive services to the victims of family violence.

"Family Abuse Center is honored to be among the 8 shelters in the state of Texas chosen to receive the Mary Kay Foundation funding for 2012. This grant is very special because it specifically provides support for the daily operations of organization, allowing us to provide emergency shelter as well as case management, legal advocacy, and counseling for victims of domestic violence and their children," Executive Director of Family Abuse Center Kathy Reid said.

The mission of Family Abuse Center is to eliminate domestic violence in Central Texas by sheltering victims and preventing abuse from occurring through intervention and education.

The FAC was founded in 1980 and has been providing emergency shelter, a hotline, and comprehensive domestic violence services to seven Central Texas counties since that time.

The shelter began in a small house with room for 6 clients and has grown to accomodate 55 beds on a 3-acre, secure and fenced facility.

The FAC is located in Waco.
