WACO (March 5, 2013)--The City of Waco is reminding its residents that selling animals in a public place is illegal.

The Waco Animal Control Unit has seen a rise in reports of animal sales in public and says it is a violation of city ordinances.

“It shall be unlawful for any person to sell, trade, barter, lease, rent, give away or convey the ownership of any animal on any roadside, public right-of-way, commercial parking lot, garage sale, flea market, festival, park, community center or outdoor public place,” the ordinance says.

The city says the sales are most often occurring near public parking and around the flea market on LaSalle.

Animals of residents who violate the ordinance can be seized and impounded at the discretion of authority, the ordinance continues.

According to the animal control unit, citations will be issued if the public does not comply.
