WACO (October 16, 2012)--Students at Hillcrest Professional Development School will be participating in a garden makeover project beginning Thursday in preparation of Veterans Day.
Community businesses and volunteers, along with a $5,000 grant form the Home Depot Foundation, will give students the opportunity to create an inspiration garden, redesign a raised garden bed and work on the school’s memorial fountain which was donated in memory of a student, Monica Hererra, who died before graduating from second grade.
Local contractor Jonathon Grant who owns Red Truck Renovations will provide assistance while American Red Cross employees have helped the students identify veterans in preparation of the Waco Veterans Day parade.
Representatives from the McLennan County Master Gardener Program will also work with students on the projects.
Work will take place from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. each day.
Once the work is complete the school will feature a large walk-around Texas garden landscape with a redesigned garden bed of native Texas plants.
The memorial fountain will be rededicated and moved to the garden area.
The mother and sister of Monica Hererra will be present at Saturday’s rededication.
