Waco: Woman Targeted By New Twist On Old Social Security Scam

WACO (June 20, 2012)—Mattie Kinnison, 91, of Waco, says she was targeted by what Social officials say is a new twist on an old scam.

Kinnison received a call from someone claiming to be from the Social Security Administration who told her that her Social Security number was being changed.

“Then they gave me a number and said, ‘now is this your number?’ And it wasn't,” she said.

She received several more calls, but says she hung up on the callers.

“I know a scam when I see one,” she said.

The scammers seem to be targeting senior citizens in the Central Texas area.

"They're trying to figure out a way to get a hold of their money and defraud them of their income," said Jan Enders with the Heart of Texas Area Agency on Aging.

The agency is hosting a Senior Fraud Forum from 9 a.m. to 12 on Thursday at the Sul Ross Senior Center in Waco in hopes of helping seniors better protect their identities from scams like these and more.

Enders says when it comes to phone calls about social security, the best thing to do is hang up.

"Social Security would not call you," Enders said.

“It would be a lengthy process for them to go through to actually change a number."

The Social Security Administration says Social Security numbers never change.
