WEST (August 29, 2013)--Four and a half months after the high school field served as a triage area for injured victims of the deadly West fertilizer plant explosion, students, teachers and residents gathered for a pep rally to kick off the new football season.
The field was re-sodded over the summer because the playing surface was damaged in the hours after the April 17 explosion.
Former Baylor football coach Grant Teaff was the keynote speaker Thursday.
He told the crowd, estimated at about 2,000, that he sensed the positive feelings radiating throughout the community when he pulled off the interstate on his way the rally.
Teaff encouraged the team and crowd to rise up and continue to face adversity with strength.
