Faithful Urged To Join Animal Welfare Campaign Save Email Print

(August 15, 2008)--Christians, Jews and Muslims are being urged to buy only cage-free eggs in October as part of the Humane Society's "All Creatures Great and Small" campaign.

Humane Society president Wayne Pacelle says many chickens and other farm animals spend their entire lives in cages and pens so small they can't move about or even turn around.

Pacelle was joined by leaders of Washington's National Cathedral and a local synagogue and mosque in calling for decent treatment of animals, including those raised for food.

Rabbi Fred Scherlinder said the Bible calls on believers to respect and care for animals as creatures made by God for more than "human use and abuse."
