(August 17, 2008)—Republican Sen. John McCain and Democratic Sen. Barack Obama got a chance Saturday night to make their cases to evangelicals. The

The two candidates were questioned for an hour each by pastor and author Rick Warren.

They differed sharply on abortion.

McCain said a baby's human rights begin "at conception," while Obama restated his support for legalized abortion.

But Obama also said more should be done to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

Asked what he thinks is America's greatest moral failure, Obama said it's not doing enough to help the disadvantaged, including the victims of poverty, sexism and racism.

McCain said the nation's greatest moral flaw is its failure to focus on causes greater than self-interest.

Both men said they regard marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

Obama said he supports civil unions for gay partners.

Midway through the program as Obama ended his segment and McCain came on to the stage for his, the two candidates exchanged handshakes and a hug and stood smiling between Warren as the audience applauded.
