(August 18, 2008)--Presidential candidates Sen. John McCain and Sen. Barack Obama both say they support some kind of federal faith-based initiative, but should religious charities that receive government funds forfeit the right to hire only fellow believers?
McCain said, "Absolutely not," in response to the question posed by the Rev. Rick Warren. In Saturday's forum at Warren's Saddleback Church,
McCain said requiring religious charities to hire people who don't share their faith and morals would undermine their mission.
But Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, when asked the same question, said he would oppose "a situation in which people are being discriminated against using federal money."
