(August 18, 2008)--Zoning officials in Virginia Beach, Va. have grounded the helicopter a pastor was using to commute between two churches.
Pastor Steve Kelly of the nondenominational Wave Church was flown on Sundays between churches that are about 30 minutes apart by car.
Flying cut the travel time to about 12 minutes, but Zoning Administrator Karen Lasley says launching and landing a helicopter in residential areas is not permitted.
Stephen Lentz, an elder at the church, says they had planned to stop using the helicopter next month, when the opening of a 2,500-seat convention center will allow more worshippers to attend fewer services.
Until then, Lentz said the helicopter seemed like a good way to be "one church in two locations."
