(August 18, 2008)—Most Americans, and many doctors, believe that God can intervene to save dying patients. a new survey suggests.
Monday's Archives of Surgery reports that 57 percent of randomly surveyed adults think God's intervention can save a family member even if doctors declared treatment would be futile and nearly three-quarters say patients have a right to demand such treatment.
Researchers say doctors "need to be prepared to deal with families who are waiting for a miracle."
When asked to imagine their own relatives being gravely ill or injured, nearly 20 percent of doctors and other medical workers also said they believed God could reverse a hopeless outcome.
