(August 19, 2008)--Eight scrolls of Hebrew Scriptures valued at around $500,000 have been stolen from a synagogue in New York.
Police are investigating last week's theft of the Torahs from the Jewish Center of Kew Gardens Hills in Queens.
Members of the Jewish Center believe it may have been an inside job because there was no sign of a forced entry.
Employee Marilyn Bagley said rabbis discovered the Torahs missing before service Saturday.
Bagley says many of the congregants are Holocaust survivors, and the Torahs had been dedicated to their families.
Each Torah is a scroll of parchment containing the first five books of the Hebrew Scriptures.
