(November 13, 2008)—State Representative-Elect Ralph Sheffield will be sworn in next Thursday in Austin to complete the term of veteran Temple lawmaker Dianne White Delisi, who resigned this fall after deciding not to run for another term.
Gov. Rick Perry will administer the oath of office to the Temple businessman at 10 a.m. Thursday in the House chamber.
Sheffield defeated Democrat Sam Murphey in both the special election to fill the unexpired term in State Representative District 55 as well as in the election for a full term beginning in 2009.
Sheffield, however, was 11 votes short of the required 50 percent in the special election to complete Delisi’s term, according to at statement issued Thursday by Bell County Judge Jon Burrows.
After provisional ballots and military ballots received by 5 p.m. Wednesday were counted, Sheffield had 44.97854 percent of the vote to Murphey’s 44.966769 percent, Burrows said.
Under the state Election Code, another special election could have been required had Murphey not conceded, which Burrows said he did after he was notified of the results.
“As anticipated, Sam did the noble and honorable thing. He was a fine candidate and remains a fine person,” Burrows said.
Once the Texas Secretary of State’s office receives Murphey’s concession, Sheffield will be declared the winner of the remainder of the 2008 term, Burrows said.
