Belton, TX – University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football players Jerrell Freeman and Joel Munoz have been named American Southwest Conference Players of the Week for their performances in the Cru’s 72-7 victory over East Texas Baptist University last Saturday. Freeman took Defensive Player of the Week honors and Munoz was voted Co-Special Teams Player of the Week.

Freeman, a senior linebacker from Waco University High School, led UMHB with 11 total tackles and he added two sacks and two tackles for loss. Freeman blocked an ETBU punt and returned it three yards for his fourth career touchdown and he also forced a fumble on a sack that UMHB’s Lee Munn scooped up and returned 18 yards for another score. The Cru defense held ETBU to just seven yards rushing and 190 yards of total offense.

Munoz, a senior punter/kicker from Ferris High School, hit 3-4 field goals and 8-8 extra points to score 17 points in the win. He also averaged 46.5 yards on his two punts and added a pair of touchbacks on kickoffs. Munoz’s only missed field goal came on a 52-yard attempt that would have tied the school record for longest field goal. He shares Special Teams Player of the Week honors with Hardin-Simmons kick returner ZaVious Robbins.

The Cru improved to 8-1 overall and 7-0 in ASC play with the win over the Tigers on Saturday. UMHB also clinched the ASC title to give the Cru five league titles in the last six years. The Cru will close out the regular season with a 1:00 PM kickoff at Howard Payne University Saturday in Brownwood. UMHB will then find out its opponent and game site for the first round of the NCAA Division III National Championships when the 32-team field is announced Sunday morning.
