WACO, Texas - Baylor sophomore Daniel Sepulveda was named the 2004 recipient of the Ray Guy Award, announced Thursday night at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN. The award is given by the Greater Augusta [Ga.] Sports Council and is named for former NFL All-Propunter and Augusta native Ray Guy.
Sepulveda was selected over Brandon Fields of Michigan State and ChrisKluwe of UCLA. The three finalists were selected from a list of 10
semifinalists last month.
Each of the 10 semifinalists was evaluated on his overall statistics and contribution to his team with emphasis placed on the following
categories: net average, percentage of total punts inside the 20,
average return yardage and percentage of punts not returned. The award is voted on by a national selection committee of college coaches, sports information directors and sports writers.
Sepulveda leads the nation with 41.9 percent of his punts inside the
opponent's 20-yard line and percentage of punts not returned (62.9
percent). He also is second nationally in net average (42.5 yards per
punt) and in average return yardage (3.5 yards per punt).
A sophomore from Dallas, Texas, Sepulveda joins Mike Singletary and
Thomas Everett as the only Baylor football student-athletes to earn a
national award. Singletary was named the Davey O'Brien Award (top
college player) recipient in 1979 and in 1980, while Everett earned the
Jim Thorpe Award (top college defensive back) in 1986.
Sepulveda ranks second in the Big 12 and third nationally with 46.0
yards per punt, the second-best single-season average in school history. Sepulveda also leads the conference with 24 punts of 50-plus yards (tied for second nationally) and 26 punts downed inside the opponent's 20 yard line (tied for first nationally). Baylor ranks fourth nationally in net punting at 40.6 yards per punt.
In just two seasons, Sepulveda already has rewritten Baylor's punting records. His career average of 44.3 yards per punt ranks first all-time at Baylor. He also has established a school record with 50 career punts of 50-plus yards. Sepulveda has eight career punts of 60-plus yards, third in school history and two shy of the Baylor record. Sepulveda has recorded at least one punt of 50-plus yards in 22 of 23 career games and at least one punt inside the opponent's 20-yard line in 19 of 23 games.
