Morriss Out After Saturday’s Game, Sources Say Save Email Print

A | A | A

(November 16, 2007)—After a string of disappointing seasons, Guy Morriss will coach his last game at Baylor Saturday evening as the Bears host the Oklahoma State University Cowboys.

News Ten Sports reported Friday evening that multiple sources confirm that Morriss was told during a short meeting on Sunday that Saturday’s game would be his last as head coach of the Bears.

An official announcement is expected soon after Saturday’s game, perhaps as early as Sunday or Monday, the sources said.

Morriss has one year remaining on his contract, but sources earlier told several news organizations that after going 18-39 in five seasons, he likely wouldn’t be back.

Athletic department officials had said that any decision about Morriss’ future wouldn’t be made until the season is over.

The 3-8 Bears face Oklahoma State University Saturday evening in Waco, still looking for the season’s first conference win.

Former Baylor and Chicago Bears linebacker Mike Singletary has said he’s interested in the head-coaching job at Baylor.

Singletary, 49, told the Dallas Morning News that he hasn’t talked formally with the school about a potential job, but said, “I’m interested if that’s where the Lord is leading me.”

He's now an assistant with the San Francisco 49ers.

I think that the firing of Coach Morriss was done the wrong way. I do agree with the rest of the people. If Morriss goes then the athletic director needs to go right behind Morriss. Ask the players what they would like done. It seems to me they are behind Morriss.

I think the way Baylor is handling this situation with Guy Morris is wrong. I think Baylor has some serious issues lately especially when it comes to their ethics. They are suppose to be a Christian University; however with situations like this one I have to wonder; is the leadership at Baylor showing their true colors?

Firing Guy Morris is not the problem, he seems to be a very good person and coach, i have been here in Waco all my life, heck they had trouble winning games in the southwest conference, what makes them think the big 12 was going to be any easier. I all boils down to the money the big 12 schools share with baylor, but other than that, i cannot compete at that level, even the bottom dwelling can beat you on any giving day, baylor is playing a teams that are better than them. They barely squeak out wins on pre-season games against much smaller and schools, but cannot stand up to the big time plays that come at them from the Big 12. Firing Morris is not the awnser, get out of the big 12 and join a much less talented conference and save the embarrassments, not only to the baylor but for us fans.

As long as Grant Taff is hiring and this program isnt supported by the University any quality coach is out of the question! Coach Morris has brought a great deal to the program and this community.Guy it should a relief getting away from Baylor politics-Good Luck you will do well.

I am sorry to hear that Coach Morriss may be leaving Baylor. I think he seems like a real nice person and a coach that the team seems to respect. Somehow I don't feel like its the coach's fault because I have lived in Waco all my life and unfortunately Baylor has not ever been able to compete as well in football as other sports and they have had many other coaches. Is is really worth all the money to play in the Big 12 and not be able to compete with bigger schools? Coach Morriss I wish you all the best!!!!

Guess I'll have to respectfully disagree with Richard and Rick. Coach Morriss has hardly wasted his time at Baylor the last 5 years. Based on my calculations, he will leave having earned more than $7,000,000 in the last 5 years, or about $125,000 per game. That doesn't sound to me like a waste of time! And regarding Crawford, who's to say the Pirates couldn't compete with Waco High? By the way, if the Lord is leading Mike Singletary back to Waco to be Baylor's next football coach, how is some "big name coach" going to do better? I remember when He led a man named Teaff here about 35 years ago.

I think it is a Big mistake to loose Guy Morris

Guy did a decent job rebuilding the program. He guided Baylor to the most success it has ever had in the Big XII. He had some solid recruiting classes and some big conference upsets (Colorado in 03, Texas A&M in 04, plus a good conference record last season,) but he came up a few wins shy of bowl eligibility the last few years. Best of luck at his next coaching position. Mike Singletary would be a great addition if he is named the new head coach. I believe he will have success recruiting with his Hall of Fame resume. His position-coaching has been impeccable in the NFL (see Ray Lewis or Patrick Willis.) We'll see if his gameday coaching is on the same level.

Baylor will have a hard time finding a better coach than Guy morris.

GUY IS A GREAT COACH. BAYLOR IS SO FAR OUT OF ITS LEAGUE THAT THE BEST FOOTBALL COACH IN THE COUNTRY COULD NOT WIN AT BAYLOR. BAYLOR SHOULD GET OUT OF THE BIG 12 AND NOT TRY TO PLAY WITH THE "BIG BOYS" THEY ARE REMAINING THERE FOR THE $ THAT THEY WILL RECEIVE WHEN ALL OF THE OTHER TEAMS HAVE TO SHARE WITH THEM. BE HONEST, BAYLOR, WHAT OTHER REASON DO YOU HAVE FOR BEING IN THE BIG 12? YOU HAVE BECOME THE GRAVEYARD FOR GOOD COACHES.

Guy Morriss departure sickens me. You people at Baylor dont't give anyone a chance. His recruiting class is about to to come through. Give them a chance. You can't win overnight. I have never been a big Baylor fan, but I would like to see them have success in football like they do in other athletic programs. You have to give a chance! You can't keep switching coaches every time you have a bad year. This guy has what it takes. Give him the opportunity to show what he can do, rather than what he can do with someone else's choices. ATTN: Ian McCaw Success does not come overnight! You have to work at it. GIVE MORRISS ANOTHER CHANCE! GREEN BAY GAVE BRETT FAVRE ANOTHER CHANCE AND LOOK WHAT HAPPENED!

The first sentence of this article illustrtates how little most people know about Baylor football and competition itself. To say that Morris' tenure at Baylor was a dissapointment is utterly rediculous. Throughout the last three seasons Baylor has made incredile strides toward becoming a consistenly competitive program. Lets go back to the A&M game last year when Bell was injured. Untill that point Baylor consistently pushed Big 12 opponents into the fourth quarter. Let me remind you that six to eight year ago teams absolutey did not even have to try to beat Baylor. Big 12 teams would come into Waco with the sole purpose of avoiding injuries. There is no doubt that winning is all that matters, but before you can win games you have to begin competing in games. Morris has forced teams to actually prepare for Baylor, and that is a MASSIVE step in the right direction. Unless Baylor is willing to pay big time money, which I don't think they are, this a huge mistake.

Don't fire the coach, fire the team. Give a man nothing to work with and you get nothing back. He probably could win as many games if he didn't even field a team

Posted by: Richard Location: Temple on Nov 16, 2007 at 10:18 PM
Too bad for Baylor. Don't you guys ever tire of thinking you can be competitive in the BIG 12 in football? Too bad for Morriss having wasted his time. It is a numbers game............. Is Crawford competitive with Waco high?? Change conferences.OH is it the money??? in the big 12.

Posted by: Rick Location: Waco on Nov 16, 2007 at 10:14 PM
I think that Baylor needs to pay a big name coach or get out of the Big 12 and Mike Singletary is not the answer, not even close...
