(November 30, 2007)--Texas Southern has hired an alum, former Lane College coach Johnnie Cole, to take over the Houston school's struggling football program.

Cole replaces Steve Wilson who was fired Nov. 8 with two games remaining in TSU's 0-11 season.

Wilson was 4-38 in three years at Texas Southern.

Athletic director Alois Blackwell told KRIV television that the former TSU assistant coach agreed to a five-year deal.

Cole went 15-16 in three years at Lane.

He was coach of the year in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 2006, the school's first winning season in 12 years.

Among the players Cole coached Lane was receiver Jacoby Jones, who was taken in the third round of the 2007 NFL draft by the Houston Texans.
