Richardson, TX - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball
team could not overcome a sluggish second-half and the Lady Cru fell to
U.T.-Dallas 73-67 Monday evening in Richardson. The loss drops the UMHB
women to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in American Southwest Conference play on
the year. The Comets improve to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the ASC with the
victory.
The UMHB women built a 39-35 halftime lead after leading by as
many as 11 points in the first period. The Comets battled back to open
the second-half with a 9-4 run to take a 44-43 lead with 17:26 left to
play. UMHB would retake the lead at 56-44 and the two teams would trade
the lead from there. The Lady Cru's final lead came at 61-60 with 6:52
left in the game, but the Comets went on a 6-0 run to go on top 66-61.
UMHB would not get closer than three points the rest of the way.
Landie Thompson topped the Lady Cru with 21 points and Janel
Daniels added 10 more off the bench for UMHB. Ericka Baker and Jenise
Langston led four UTD players in double figures with 14 points apiece.
UTD out rebounded the UMHB women 41-35, but the two teams were almost
dead even in every other category.
The UMHB women will now take 11 days off before returning to
action. The Lady Cru will travel to San Antonio to play two games in the
Trinity University Tournament on December 28th and 29th.
UMHB MEN'S BASKETBALL TOPS U.T.-DALLAS
Richardson, TX - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's basketball
team fought back from a second-half deficit and then iced the game from
the free-throw line to post a 63-56 victory over U.T.-Dallas Monday
night in Richardson. The Cru, ranked fifth in the country in the
D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, improves to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in American
Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops the Comets to
5-3 overall and 2-2 in the ASC on the season.
UTD led 31-30 at halftime and stretched the lead to eight points
at 50-42 with 9:11 remaining. The Cru then went on a 13-4 run to take a
55-54 lead with 4:37 to go. UMHB would not trail again and the Cru
defense held the Comets to just two points the rest of the way. The Cru
also hit six free throws in the final 3:36 to put the game away.
Ryan Burgart led the Cru with 15 points on 6-8 shooting from the
field. Jason Wagner came off the bench to add 14 points, including some
clutch free-throws down the stretch. Matt Caskey and Matt Dickey added
11 points apiece for UMHB and Dickey also grabbed a game-high seven
rebounds. Ernie Lowery kept the Comets in the game with his three-point
shooting and finished with 23 points. Lowery hit 5-8 from beyond the
arc.
The Cru shot 51 per cent from the field as a team and held the
Comets to 38 per cent shooting. UMHB was 5-11 from three-point range
while UTD was 8-33 from long-range. The Cru also went 16-25 from the
free-throw line while the Comets were just 4-7 from the charity stripe.
The Cru will now take 11 days off before returning to action
with the two-day, four-team Cru Crothall Holiday Classic on December
28th and 29th. The UMHB men will open the tournament with an 8:00 PM
tip-off against Worcester State on Friday, December 28th at the Mayborn
Campus Center.
