UMHB Baseball Sweeps Texas College

Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team exploded for a nine-run fourth inning in game two and the Cru rolled to a 15-8 victory for a doubleheader sweep of Texas College Monday afternoon in Belton. UMHB took game one by an 11-4 score. The Cru improves to 4-0 on the season with the wins. Texas College falls to 0-9 on the year with the two losses.

The Cru fell behind 6-0 in game two after Kyle Horan’s three-run homer and two-run double highlighted the first two innings for the Steers. UMHB battled back with four runs in the third. Joseph Villegas doubled home the first run, Adam Froeschl hit a sacrifice fly, Steven Reinlie added an RBI single and Jonathan Whitehead drew a bases-loaded walk. Texas College added a run on Kurt Knight’s RBI double in the top of the fourth before the Cru put nine runs on the board in the bottom of the frame. Marcus Volz led off with a solo homer, R.B. Garza added a bases-loaded walk, Andrew White was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and another run scored on a balk. Earnest Pena then blasted a three-run homer and Villegas added a two-run shot. The Steers added a run in the seventh before Whitehead’s RBI double and an RBI single from Pena provided insurance in the eighth for UMHB.

Josh Welch got the win for UMHB with four innings of one-hit relief. He struck out four and walked three. Pena went 3-5 with four RBI and Volz, Villegas, Froeschl and Whitehead added two hits apiece for the Cru. Horan finished 2-5 with five RBI for the Steers.

UMHB took control of the game early and coasted to an 11-4 win in game one, carried over from suspension on Saturday. The Cru jumped out to a 10-3 lead on a big day from Volz and then cruised to the win. Volz finished with a 3-5 day and five RBI. Villegas and White had three hits apiece and Froeschl and Reinlie both drove in two runs for the Cru. Zack Tumlinson earned the win for UMHB with five innings of three-hit pitching.

UMHB will continue its home stand with a 2:00 PM single game against Trinity University tomorrow. The Cru will then host East Texas Baptist University for a three-game series this Friday and Saturday.
