(April 12, 2008)--The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team could not overcome early deficits in either game as the Cru dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Concordia Texas Saturday afternoon in Belton. UMHB lost game one 11-3 and fell 13-7 in game two. The losses drop the Cru to 25-10 overall and 11-7 in American Southwest Conference West Division play. UMHB also drops out of first place in the West and into a second-place tie with Concordia. The Tornados improve to 23-13 overall and 11-7 in the ASC West with the two victories and CTX also clinches a tiebreaker over UMHB with a three-game sweep of the Cru this weekend.

Concordia took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one on Brian Wernecke’s two-run homer. Wernecke added an RBI single and the Tornados scored another run on an error to make it 4-0 in the top of the third. CTX then exploded for a seven-run fifth inning, highlighted by Tom Williams’ grand slam as the lead stretched to 11-0. Adam Froeschl singled home a run and Joseph Villegas added an RBI groundout to cut it to 11-2 in the fifth and Earnest Pena hit a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh. Zack Tumlinson took the loss for the Cru to drop to 3-1 on the year. Stephen Szkotak moved his record to 7-4 with the win for the Tornados. Wernecke had three hits for CTX and UMHB pitchers walked nine batters and hit two more in the loss.

The Tornados used a five-run fourth-inning to take control of the second game. Williams hit a solo homer in the first to make it 1-0 Concordia and Wernecke’s RBI single in the third made it 2-0. Pena hit a solo homer in the bottom of the third to cut it to 2-1 before the Tornados had their five-run frame. Bryan Jacobs doubled home two of the runs and Patrick Mercer added a two-run homer in the inning. Jonathan Whitehead singled home two runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut it to 7-3. CTX added a run in the fifth before Whitehead singled home another run in the bottom of the sixth. After a Szkotak homer in the top of the seventh, Pena hit his second homer of the game to make it 9-5 and Steven Reinlie doubled home another run to cut it to 9-6. Concordia added three more in the eighth and one in the ninth before the Cru scored on final run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning. Jared Hopper took the loss to drop to 2-3 for UMHB. Ben Whiteley picked up the win to raise his record to 7-2 for Concordia. Pena and Reinlie had three hits apiece for UMHB. Szkotak had a team-high three hits for Concordia.

UMHB will close out the regular season with a three-game series at Howard Payne University next weekend in Brownwood. The two teams will play a 2:00 PM single game on Friday before closing out the weekend with a 12:00 PM doubleheader on Friday
