(April 19, 2008)--The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team used solid pitching and timely hitting and the Cru went on to a doubleheader sweep of Texas Lutheran University Saturday afternoon in Belton. UMHB took game one 2-0 and then posted a 6-1 victory in game two. The Cru stretches its winning streak to 20 straight games with the two victories and improves to 27-5 overall and 20-0 in American Southwest Conference West Division play. UMHB also clinched its second straight ASC West Division title and a #1 seed in the ASC Championship Tournament in two weeks. TLU falls to 10-24 overall and 5-15 in the ASC West with the two losses.

The Cru took an early lead and never looked back in a 2-0 win in game one. Katina Penter’s RBI single in the bottom of the second inning made it 1-0 UMHB. The Cru added an insurance run on Erica Salazar’s RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning. That was more than enough offense for Daphne Kahlig. Kahlig threw a complete-game, four-hitter to raise her record to 10-2 on the season. She struck out four and walked just one in the game. Penter, Salazar, Becca Ribera and Kelsey Greeson had two hits apiece for UMHB. Alison Organ had two of TLU’s four hits in the loss.

The Cru then grabbed an early lead and held on for a 6-1 victory in game two. UMHB scored two runs in the first inning on a throwing error and a sacrifice fly. The Cru stretched it to 3-0 on another throwing error in the third inning. TLU cut it to 3-1 on Organ’s RBI single in the top of the sixth, but the Cru added three more in the bottom of the sixth to put it out of reach. Charlsie Cope hit a sacrifice fly, Penter singled home a run and Lindsey Gordon stole home on a double steal to account for the Cru runs. Kelsey Greeson threw a complete-game, three-hitter for UMHB to improve to 12-1 on the year. Greeson struck out eight and walked two. Christian Jacobsen took a no-hitter into the fifth-inning for TLU before Ribera broke it up with an infield single. Jacobsen finished with a three-hitter but still fell to 7-8 on the season. Organ had two of TLU’s three hits in the game.

The Cru will return to action with a four-game series at Hardin-Simmons University next weekend in Abilene. UMHB will then close out the regular season with a non-conference doubleheader at Houston-Victoria on April 28th.
