(April 20, 2008)--The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team dominated both games as the Cru swept a pair of games from Howard Payne Sunday afternoon in Brownwood and clinched a share of the first American Southwest Conference West Division title in school history. UMHB posted a 19-5 win in the completion of a game suspended from Saturday and then took a 9-1 decision to finish in a four-way tie for first place in the ASC West Division. The Cru finishes the regular season with a 28-10 overall record and a 14-7 mark in ASC West Division play. The 28 wins are the most for UMHB since moving to NCAA Division III. Howard Payne closes out the season with a 14-26 overall record and an 8-13 mark in the ASC West.

UMHB broke open a close game with a five-run eighth inning as the Cru rolled to a 9-1 victory in the series finale. The game was scoreless going into the top of the fifth before UMHB put three runs on the board. Steve Reinlie and Andrew White hit RBI singles and Jonathan Whitehead added an RBI triple. Adam Froeschl’s RBI single made it 4-0 Cru in the top of the sixth. White doubled home two more runs in the eighth, R.B. Garza singled home two more and Whitehead added an RBI single to make it 9-0 UMHB. Howard Payne scored one in the bottom of the ninth, but could not get any closer. Jared Hopper got the win for UMHB with seven shutout innings. Hopper raised his record to 3-3 after striking out seven and scattering five hits. Froeschl and Joseph Villegas had three hits apiece to lead the Cru offense.

The Cru took control of the suspended game with an eight-run first inning and never looked back on the way to a 19-5 win. Two-run doubles from Whitehead and Marcus Volz and Froeschl’s two-run single were the biggest hits of the inning. Garza’s RBI double made it 9-0 Cru in the second. It would be a 12-5 game going to the top of the sixth, when UMHB exploded for six more runs. Froeschl hit a two-run double and Reinlie, White and Whitehead also added RBI in the inning. The Cru added one more run in the top of the seventh and the game ended on the run rule after the bottom of the seventh. Zack Tumlinson earned the win for UMHB to improve to 4-1 on the season. Froeschl and White had four hits apiece and Volz and Earnest Pena added three hits apiece. One of Volz’s hits was a double to give him a new UMHB single-season record with 22 doubles on the year.

UMHB will now advance to the ASC Championship Tournament for the second straight season. The Cru will be the #3 seed from the ASC West Division and will play a three-game series at East Division #2 seed Mississippi College next weekend. The two teams will play a best-of-three series on Friday and Saturday. The winner will then advance to the second round of the ASC Tournament the following weekend. Game times and additional details about the UMHB-MC series will be announced later this week.
