(August 21, 2008)--The powerhouse U.S. beach volleyball team of Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor fought off the elements as well as a strong team from China and the Chinese fans to win gold in women's beach volleyball.
The entire match was played in a downpour that started early in the morning.
Walsh admitted afterwards that the rain did affect play but not enough for the Americans not to close out the Chinese, 21-18, 21-18.
Despite the rain, the stadium was packed with over 12,000 spectators.
The wet and heavy ball forced them to bump-set instead of doing it over their heads, and the sometimes driving rain made it difficult to look up to receive passes.
The gives the team the gold medal in back to back Olympics, marking the first time that's been accomplished.
The combination of Walsh and May-Treanor has now won 108 consecutive matches.
