(September 20, 2008)--The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team scored on its first possession and never looked back as the Cru, ranked 3rd in the nation by d3football.com, rolled to a 63-7 victory over Texas Lutheran University Saturday night in Belton. UMHB improves to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in American Southwest Conference play and stretches its ASC winning streak to 22 consecutive games. Texas Lutheran falls to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the ASC with the loss.

After forcing a TLU punt to open the game, the Cru marched 58 yards in three plays and Josh Saenz capped the drive with a three-yard TD run to make it 7-0 Cru. Matt Hurst erupted for a 29-yard TD run on the next drive to make it 14-0 and Hurst went nine yards on the second play of the second quarter to give UMHB a 21-0 edge. Hurst added a 20-yard TD run on the next Cru possession to make it 28-0. Joel Waldon then found a wide-open Steven Thrash for a 52-yard TD pass on a 4th and one play on the next TLU drive to cut it to 28-7, but that’s as close as the Bulldogs would get. Saenz went 11 yards for a TD on the last UMHB possession of the first half to make it a 35-7 game at halftime. Aerttrail Robinson took the opening kickoff of the second half 100 yards for a touchdown to make it 42-7. The 100-yard kickoff return is the longest in ASC history, breaking the mark of 98 yards held by three people, including UMHB’s Shaun Rochon and Jarvis Thrasher. Saenz threw a 65-yard TD pass to Pi’Dadro Davis to make it 49-7, Hurst added a 38-yard TD run and third-string quarterback Luke Howard ran five yards for the final UMHB touchdown.

The Cru finished with 437 yards rushing and 121 passing for 558 yards of total offense. The Bulldogs ran for 126 yards to become just the fourth team to rush for 100 or more yards against the Cru in the last 40 contests. TLU finished with 380 yards of total offense.

Hurst ran for 186 yards and tied a UMHB single-game record with four rushing touchdowns. Roger Sanchez added 100 yards on 15 carries and Saenz ran for 76 yards and two scores and threw for 107 yards and a TD. Davis caught two passes for 107 yards and a score. UMHB lost All-ASC running back Quincy Daniels to an injury on the Cru’s first offensive play of the game. Daniels will be re-evaluated on Monday. Anthony Smith ran for 81 yards on 15 carries for the Bulldogs and Waldon finished 21-38 passing for 254 yards. Josh Goode led the Cru defense with 13 total tackles and a forced fumble, Dwight Bonner rang up 15 total tackles for the Bulldogs.

UMHB will now hit the road for the first time this season for next week’s game. The Cru will face McMurry University (0-3, 0-1 ASC) in a 6:00 PM kickoff at Wilford Moore Stadium in Abilene next Saturday.
