Baylor Upends Nebraska, 1-0 Save Email Print

(October 5, 2008)--Freshman Bethany Johnston picked a perfect opportunity for her first career goal, as her strike in the fifth minute proved to be the game winner in Baylor's 1-0 win over Nebraska on Sunday at Betty Lou Mays Field. The win improved the Bears to 5-5-2 overall and 1-1-1 in conference, and snapped Nebraska's eight-game unbeaten streak, moving the Huskers to 7-5-1 overall and 3-0-1 in Big 12 play.

"This team deserved to win this game with how hard we defended," head coach Marci Jobson said. "We had some tired legs out there, but they battled through it with heart and determination."

Baylor's defense continues to be a force, as the Bears have allowed just one goal in the last five games.

The game got off to a fast start for the Bears, as the game's first and only goal came just over four minutes into the opening half. With a strong wind at her back, goalkeeper Gianna Quintana sent a booming goal kick past the center line, where Christine Clark flicked the ball over the Husker defense allowing Johnston to run on and blast the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Nebraska took eight shots to the Bears' five in the first half, but only caused Quintana to make one save.

The Huskers came out with the wind at their back and applied pressure with six corner kicks in the first 10 minutes, but Baylor's defense, led by goalkeeper Courtney Seelhorst, proved to be up to the task. Nebraska peppered the Baylor goal with 16 shots in the second stanza, only to see Seelhorst continually make big plays.

Seelhorst came up with six saves in the second half, but none bigger than with 20 seconds left in the game. Nebraska's Anna Caniglia took a shot, trying to beat Seelhorst to the low, near post, but Seelhorst collected it cleanly to preserve the shutout.

The clean slate was the sixth for Bears on the season and the fourth in the last five games.
Baylor will hit the road for the first time in Big 12 play, taking on Texas Tech on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. and Colorado on Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. CT.
