(October 18, 2008)--The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team trailed for the first time this season, but the Cru bounced back with 26 consecutive points and then held on for a 26-14 victory over Mississippi College Saturday afternoon in Belton. The Cru improves to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. UMHB also stretched its ASC winning streak to 26 straight games. The loss drops the Choctaws to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the ASC.
Mississippi College controlled the ball for much of the first quarter, but turned the ball over on a fumble on the game’s opening possession and on downs on the next Choctaw drive. After a UMHB fumble deep in Choctaw territory, Mississippi College went on an 11-play, 84-yard drive capped by Tony Reyer’s four-yard touchdown pass to Renard Ellis with nine seconds left in the first quarter. It marked the first time this season that the Cru had trailed and also the first points surrendered by UMHB in the first quarter of a game this season. The Cru was forced to punt on the next possession and a brilliant play by Josh Goode downed the ball at the Choctaw one-yard line. Reyer stepped out of the end zone on the next play to give UMHB a safety and make it a 7-2 game. The Cru went on a nine-play, 72-yard drive capped by Brian Scott’s 30-yard run on an end-around to make it 9-7 UMHB with 2:11 left in the first half. After forcing an MC punt, UMHB added a 47-yard Alan Munoz field goal with 13 seconds left in the half to make it 12-7 Cru at the break. UMHB drove 70 yards on the opening possession of the second half before Tommy Vadell scored on a one-yard TD run to make it a 19-7 lead. The next Cru possession ended with Josh Saenz hitting Marcos Garcia with a six-yard TD pass to push the lead to 26-7. The Choctaws answered with a 13-play, 71-yard drive that ended with Desmond Mays scoring from one yard out to cut the lead to 26-14, but that was as close as Mississippi College would get as the Cru held on the next three Choctaw possessions.
Scott caught three passes for 103 yards and added the 30-yard touchdown run to lead the Cru offense. Josh Landrum ran for 76 yards on 10 carries at running back in his first varsity action for UMHB. Saenz ran for 31 yards and threw for 161 yards and a touchdown. Bryson Tucker led the UMHB defense with 12 tackles and Derrick Williams added 10 more. The Cru finished with 342 yards of total offense with 181 of those coming on the ground. Mississippi College ran for 183 yards and finished with 308 yards of total offense. Mays ran for 145 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries and became the first individual to run for over 100 yards against the Cru since Willamette University put a pair of players over the century mark in the 2005 season opener. Reyer was just 10-24 passing for 125 yards and a touchdown.
UMHB will now hit the road for the final non-conference game of the season. The Cru will travel to Ashland, Oregon to face Southern Oregon University next Saturday. That game will kick off at 3:00 PM Central Time.
