(November 1, 2008)--The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team bounced back from its first loss of the season with a dominating performance on both sides of the ball as the Cru posted a 27-6 victory over East Texas Baptist University Saturday afternoon in Marshall. UMHB improves to 7-1 overall and 6-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The Cru also extends its ASC winning streak to 27 straight games. East Texas Baptist falls to 4-4 overall and 4-3 in the ASC with the loss.
The Cru took a 3-0 first-quarter lead on Alan Munoz's 45-yard field goal with 4:24 remaining in the first quarter. UMHB would stretch the lead to 10-0 on Matt Hurst's four-yard TD run with 9:48 to go in the second quarter. ETBU would put three points on the board on Kyle Pope's 37-yard field goal with 1:23 left in the first half. A UMHB fumble on the ensuing kickoff gave the ball back to the Tigers on the Cru 18-yard line. Pope then added a 36-yard field goal to make it 10-6 at halftime. UMHB opened the second half with a three-play, 66-yard drive capped by Josh Landrum's three-yard TD run to make it 17-6 just 58 seconds into the second half. A Ben Beckworth interception gave the ball back to the Cru on the ETBU 11 and Munoz hit a 22-yard field goal to make it 20-6 Cru. Bryson Tucker added an insurance touchdown for UMHB on an 18-yard touchdown run with 8:35 left in the fourth quarter and the Cru defense shut down the Tigers from there.
Tucker finished with 138 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries in his first action at running back. Tucker became the sixth different player to rush for 100 or more yards in a game for the Cru this season. Kyle Noack started at quarterback and went 7-10 passing for 110 yards. Brian Scott had two catches for 53 yards for UMHB. The Cru ran for 298 yards and totaled 410 yards of total offense while holding the Tigers to just 19 yards rushing and 140 yards of total offense. UMHB fumbled seven times and lost four of those, but intercepted three passes. Stephen Oehlschlaeger was 16-29 passing for 121 yards for ETBU and Jari Brooks caught six passes for 71 yards to lead the Tiger offense.
The Cru will now return home for the final regular season home game of the year next Saturday. UMHB will host Howard Payne for a 2:00 PM kickoff at Tiger Field. A win in that game would clinch at least a share of the ASC title for the Cru and also guarantee UMHB a berth in the NCAA Division III National Championships.
