(November 8, 2008)--The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team dominated from the opening kickoff and the Cru rolled to a 67-0 victory over Howard Payne University Saturday afternoon in Belton. UMHB improves to 8-1 overall and 7-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The Cru also clinches at least a share of the ASC title and claims the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III national Championships with the victory. UMHB also stretches its ASC winning streak to 27 consecutive games. The loss drops Howard Payne to 2-7 overall and 1-6 in the ASC.

UMHB’s Chris Lambeth intercepted a pass on Howard Payne’s game-opening drive and returned it 52 yards to the Yellow Jacket 19-yard line. Tommy Vadell hammered in from a yard out three plays later to give UMHB a 6-0 lead. Bryson Tucker scored on a 13-yard run on the Cru’s next possession to stretch the lead to 13-0 and Kyle Noack hit Pi’Dadro Davis with a 30-yard TD pass to give UMHB a 20-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Alan Munoz hit field goals of 42 and 31 yards to push the lead to 26-0 before Simon Montelongo scored on a one-yard run and Noack found Brian Scott with an 18-yard TD strike to make it a 40-0 Cru lead at halftime. Josh Saenz sandwiched a pair of short touchdown runs around Tucker’s 81-yard punt return for a touchdown to make it 60-0 at the end of the third quarter. Roger Sanchez then closed out the scoring with a seven-yard touchdown run with 2:32 remaining in the game.

The Cru rolled up 479 yards of total offense in the game with 371 of those coming on the ground. UMHB also forced three turnovers and posted two sacks. Howard Payne managed just 100 yards of total offense and 29 yards rushing. The Yellow Jackets had 71 yards of offense at the end of the first quarter and managed just 29 offensive yards in the next three quarters.

Tucker led the UMHB offense with 89 rushing yards and he added 104 return yards. Sanchez added 82 rushing yards on 12 carries and Josh Saenz ran for a pair of touchdowns in the second half. Noack was 5-7 passing for 108 yards and two touchdowns, all of them in the first half. Brenson Bristow led the Cru defense with seven tackles and 2.0 tackles for loss. Lambeth, Tim Kennedy and Derrick Williams all intercepted passes for UMHB. Jonathan Haddock was 8-20 passing for HPU for 71 yards and Corbin Young had two catches for 28 yards. Enrique Gonzalez ran for 24 yards on a lateral to lead the Howard Payne running game.

UMHB will now close out the regular season with a 1:00 PM kickoff at Sul Ross State University next Saturday in Alpine. A win over the Lobos would give the Cru a fourth straight outright ASC title. UMHB will then find out its first-round opponent and game site for the NCAA Championships when the 32-team field is announced on Sunday, November 16th.
