Landis Says He’s Innocent Save Email Print

(August 7, 2006)—American Tour de France champion Floyd Landis said Monday a second positive result finding high levels of a synthetic testosterone in his system during the race could have been from “a myriad of reasons.” Landis denies using any performance enhancing substance during the race. He insinuated that the result could have come from “some other agenda by the people” who administered the test. Phonak Cycling, the Swiss team that represents Landis, dropped him as team captain Saturday without notice for violating the team’s internal ethical code. Landis faces the loss of his title and a two-year ban from cycling after tests on an alternate urine sample confirmed high levels of testosterone. The two-year ban would come from USA Cycling, which is responsible for sanctions against the American rider. Saturday's announcement in Paris by the International Cycling Union could set off months of appeals and arguments by Landis, who has repeatedly claimed his innocence and vowed to fight the allegations.
