AUSTIN (September 11, 2009)--The Class 5A football championship games are returning to the Alamodome in San Antonio this year.

The University Interscholastic League announced Friday that the 5A Division I championship game is set for 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19. The Division II game will follow at 7 p.m.

The Alamodome hosted the first two years of same-site 5A title games in 2006 and 2007. Houston's Reliant Stadium was the venue last year.

This was the first year the new Cowboys Stadium could have been the site for the 5A title games. However, Texas and North Carolina are playing the first basketball game there on Dec. 19.

I sure hope they bring in ref's from outside the area if one of the teams is from San Antonio :(

John, you are right on the travel issue. But having it at a predetermined location makes it more of an event, like a bowl. It is meant to be outside, but much like major bowls, the games are being scheduled in a dome to eliminate the risk of snow (well in Texas freezing rain). I love watching games outside but have been to a bunch of championship games around Christmas that the weather was terrible and sometimes plays more of a factor than how good either team is.

Sorry sports fans but state championship football aren't meant to played in the rainy, windy, cold december day. football should be played outdoors when the weather is tolerable but a state championship game is a once in lifetime experience for the fans and players alike and having it indoors is a must as far as Im concerned but hey that's just my opinion. Sic'em Bears.
