McKinney, TX - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's golf team
battled injuries and windy condition and the Lady Cru is in second place
after the opening round of the American Southwest Conference
Championship Tournament in McKinney. The UMHB women fired a first-round
334 team total and the Lady Cru trails team leader Texas Lutheran
University's 331 team total by three strokes. Hardin-Simmons University
is in third place with a 352 total, McMurry University shot 357 for
fourth place, LeTourneau University is in fifth with a 373 and
U.T.-Dallas is in sixth place with a 437 team score. The two-day,
36-hole event is being played on a par-72, 5,871-yard layout at
Stonebridge Country Club in McKinney.
UMHB was led individually by Jenna Felechner. Felechner fired a
76 for the UMHB women and has a three-stroke lead in the individual
standings. Christi Williams added an 83 and is tied for sixth place,
Heather Barber posted an 87 and sits in 11th place, Venessa Gonzalez
carded an 88 to tie for 12th place and Courtney Kruppa shot 92 for the
Lady Cru to tie for 17th place. Schreiner University's Suraya Minhas is
the only player other then Felechner to shoot a score in the 70's.
Minhas fired a 79 and is second in the individual standings.
"We're just happy to be within three strokes of the lead," Lady
Cru head coach Darla Kirby said. "We really struggled today and I really
feel like Jenna's round of 76 is what kept us in reach. We need to go
out and have a good round tomorrow and I feel like we can play better
and we still have a chance to post a good number."
The tournament wraps up with 18 more holes tomorrow. The women
will tee off with a shotgun start at 9:00 AM.
