McKinney, TX - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's golf team
could not close the leaders during the final round of the American
Southwest Conference Championship and the Cru finished third in the team
standings. The UMHB men posted a 303-298-301=902 total to finish 14
strokes behind team champion Texas Lutheran University's 293-288-307=888
total. McMurry University claimed second place with a 303-302-288=893
team score. Hardin-Simmons University took fourth place with a
292-299-315=906, LeTourneau University finished fifth at
312-308-298=918, Mississippi College was sixth with a 308-301-310=919,
U.T.-Dallas finished seventh after shooting 309-299-313=921 and
Louisiana College was eighth at 325-316-317=958. The two-day, 54-hole
event was played on a par-72, 7,117-yard layout at Stonebridge Ranch
Country Club in McKinney.
UMHB's Casey Wharton posted the top individual finish for the
Cru. Wharton posted a 77-76-71=224 to tie for sixth place. William
Browne tied for eighth place individually after carding a 73-73=80=226.
Wharton and Browne both earned spots on the ASC All-Conference Second
Team. UMHB's Ryan Eastman finished in a tie for 11th place with a
76-74-77=227, Eric White tied for 18th place after posting a
77-75-77=229 and Davis Dewald tied for 27th place with an 81-77-76=234.
Texas Lutheran's Ryan Kiel won individual medalist honors with a
69-70-76=215 total.
"We didn't play badly again, we were pretty consistent all three
rounds," Cru head coach Randy Mann said. "We were hoping to jump to
second place but McMurry just had a phenomenal round. We were more
consistent this tournament than we had been and that's something that we
can build on over the summer and as we get ready for next year."
Texas Lutheran claims the ASC's automatic bid to the NCAA
Division III National Championships with the title today. The UMHB men
will have to hope for an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament.
