WACO (December 16, 2009) - Baylor has received signed National Letters of Intent from two junior college football players, Robert Griffin of Navarro College and Isaac Williams of El Camino College, head coach Art Briles announced Wednesday.

The two mid-year junior college signees will enroll at Baylor for the spring semester. They join Troy Baker of nearby Connally High School in Waco as three early enrollee newcomers who will participate in 2010 spring drills with the Bears.

“Our philosophy with junior college athletes is we don’t recruit them to stand,” Briles said. “We expect them to come in and play and to deliver. And we feel Robert Griffin and Isaac Williams can do that for the Baylor football program.”

Griffin, unrelated to current Baylor sophomore quarterback Robert Griffin III, was a standout offensive lineman for two seasons at Navarro. He is ranked No. 34 on Rivals.com’s junior college top 50 rankings.

The 6-foot, 6-inch, 345-pound lineman helped Navarro to an 11-1 record and a No. 3 national ranking in the final NJCAA poll as a sophomore in 2009. Griffin was named an honorable mention All-SWJCFC player last season.

“Robert is a physical specimen,” Briles said. “We feel like he’s going to provide immediate help and that he has a great upside.”

A two-time All-District 7-5A honoree on the defensive line at Trinity High School in Euless, Texas, Griffin helped lead THS to a 15-1 record and the Division I state championship as a senior in 2007. He played under head coach Steve Lineweaver at Trinity and helped the Trojans to a 26-2 record in his final two seasons. He was listed on the Dallas Morning News Area Top 100 as a senior.

Williams, a 6-foot, 190-pound all-purpose back played for El Camino College as a sophomore in 2008 and was rated among the nation’s top 100 junior college prospects by Rivals.com. El Camino finished 9-1 and Williams totaled 209 rushing yards, 120 receiving yards and 109 kick return yards.

“Isaac is hungry, determined and focused,” Briles said. “He’s someone that he feels he has something to prove, and I like that. He’s another mature guy that understands that the clock is ticking.”

As a freshman Williams played at Los Angeles Southwest College where he had 170 yards rushing, 120 yards receiving and 74 yards in kick returns in 2007. Williams prepped at Locke High School in Los Angeles where as a senior in 2006 he topped 1,600 yards rushing and 300 yards receiving.

Baylor also expects to have three student-athletes from its 2009 signing class enrolled in January and participating in 2010 spring drills in March: quarterback Bryce Petty of Midlothian High School and receivers Tevin Reese of Temple High School and Skyler Scott of Lancaster High School.
